Episode 19 redux

After listening to the episode, I realized about 10 or 15 minutes in, my voice achieves a very annoying echo. My apologies to everyone listening. I remixed it and fixed it. However, I am having trouble getting itunes to update to the latest. In fact, I am having trouble getting downloading through itunes completely. It can still be found through the website. I will continue to try to fix this issue. Thanks for everyone's patience.

Episode 19 - Magic potion hiding places

Recorded Episode 19 last night. We continue to experiment with recording methods to varying degrees of success. This episode features reviews including Punisher Max #4, Mr. Amperduke, Crogan's March, Weapon X #11, Groo Hogs of Horder #3, Shrapnel, and a few more.
Drew thinks Roachmill is "Begging to be Bound".
And the flashback reviews will tell where supervillains like Diablo hide their magic potions.

We recorded episode 18 last night. The sound was little funky because I couldn't get the regular microphones to work. So, we had to use one microphone between us that plugged into the USB port. It sounds ok, but definitely not ideal. I hope everybody enjoys it and leave us some feedback. Thanks, all.

Episode 16 and other things

Just got episode 16 up and posted. We talk about a lot of comics that came out in the last couple of weeks. We talk about the collection philosophy of DC comics in regards to All Star Comics. The great Ipad debate starts, and we do some flashback reviews giving some love to Jim Starlin and Thanos. Oh yeah, and another Sin City review, but we are getting very close to the end of those.

Also, we got out facebook page up and running for those of you who engage in such things. In even bigger news, we got accepted into the Comics Podcast Network. Woo Hoo!!!

What the apple tablet means to a long time comic book reader.

Myriad people have commented on the apple tablet and how it could impact comic books as we know it today. Unfortunately, they tend to focus on the effect it will have on attracting new readers. Whereas this is important, I'm more interested in what it means to someone, like myself, who already reads a ton of comic books, both in single issues and collected editions. The apple tablet has the potential to affect the comic book medium in a drastic way.

1. Distribution. Distribution has always been a issue with the printed medium. Whether it is a paperboy delivering your newspaper to your driveway every morning, or if one has to go to a specialty shop every Wednesday to get a decent selection of content. In the comic book world, comic books are pretty much distributed by a single entity: Diamond Comics Distributers Inc. A monopoly is never good for innovation and price, and such is the case with comic books. Distribution could be completely opened up to each individual publisher, virtually leveling the playing field. For once, content could live and die by it's merit and marketing prowess.

2. Price. Over the past twenty years, the price of a comic book from a major publisher has increased 400% to 500%, way outpacing inflation. Like a lot of comic book readers, I would purchase more content if the prices were lower. With lower printing and distribution costs, publishers could potentially lower prices. Also, it would allow smaller publishers to set prices lower to compete or to get consumers to try their products.

3. Cost. Directly related to price, cost of production would potentially go way down. Most comic books have their post production done on a computer, anyway, so the material is already on the proper platform. Also, a single comic book page is about the same size as an apple tablet screen is purported to be, so very little digital manipulation would be required. No printing costs and no distribution costs is a win-win for everyone. Obviously, some material would make its way to print editions. Penny Arcade is a good example of a webcomic that has printed editions for those consumers who prefer to have a hard copy of the material.

Although the future looks bright, there are some potential dark spots. Unless Apple is planning on having a book store similar to their music store, the consumer is going to be left to choose from competing apps with a potentially endless variety of formats. Also, as a sufferer of eyestrain, a tablet computer with a backlit screen does not have the same appeal as an e-reader with digital paper. Experts tend to agree that staring at real paper is much less harmful to your eyes compared to staring at a computer screen for the same amount of time. Digital paper, the kind found on e-readers, is supposed to be much less stressful for your eyes. Lastly, and this one is a bit nit-picky, moving all my existing books and comic books is nowhere near as simple as importing all my CD's to my Ipod. Ideally, it would be preferable to have all my content in one place without the need to repurchase the material in a digital format.

All told, the next few days will, hopefully, shed some light on the subject and we'll be one step closer to the data crystal, holding the sum of all human knowledge, that fits in the palm of my hand. Oh yeah, and my flying car. Still waiting for that, as well.

We just got episode 11 recorded last night. I listed my opinions and impressions of Scalped after reading the first 5 trades in the last week or so. Don was jonesing on Kelley Jones in Batman: The Unseen. We recorded at Don's house again since my in-laws are staying in my "recording studio". This was our longest episode, but, hey, when we're both off of work we have a lot of time to read comics. Hope you enjoy!

Got the next episode recorded. Episode 7!!!! Also, I got my brother to join me. Unfortunately, I think the recording quality went down. We used different microphones, and he was not as close to my microphone as I was, so it created a volume discrepancy between our voice volumes. I tried to correct it through editing, but my lame equipment made it difficult. Next time will be better, I promise.

Been reading my Fantastic Four run. I started with issue 86, which is my only Lee and Kirby issue. You know, with everyone bitching about Eaglesham drawing Reed so buff in the new FF book, they need to go back and check out how Kirby drew him. He's pretty stout. I think Byrne must have slimmed him down, and set the standard from that point forward. People need to learn their history, Eaglesham is just taking him back to they way he was.

Got the second episode recorded. It came in a bit longer than I wanted, but I enjoyed creating the retrospective on Walter Simonson (one of my favorite artists). I may need a better microphone because I'm not sure how to get rid of the static when I am recording my voice. If anybody has any pointers, I would love to hear them. I got the first podcast recorded last night. I thought that was going to be the most challenging part, but, as usual, life has surprised me. Trying to get it posted to the web and get someone to actually listen to it is seeming to be the most challenging part.
I'm hoping I can get it posted to the Comics Podcast Network, but they want you to have 10 episodes under your belt. I may be broadcasting to the void here for awhile. I tried to drum up some interest by posting a link on some comic book forums, but I seem to have a hit a nerve. I guess I wasn't the first person to think of that.
I must say it gives me some new found respect for all the pod casters who have managed to build up a following.
I did get it posted to itunes, though, so that happened faster than I thought.
